Submitting Short Term Disability Paperwork After Stillbirth

If you have been impacted by pregnancy loss, our heartfelt condolences. Stillbirth is the loss of a baby after 20 weeks of pregnancy but before the baby is born. If you or your partner has experienced a stillbirth, you may be entitled to short-term and long-term paid or unpaid leave, subject to your individual circumstances or employment. In this article we outline the process of submitting short-term and/or long-term disability paperwork in the most efficient and painless way possible.

1) Contact your care provider about the need for time off to recover physically and emotionally.

Often, women who have an early miscarriage are able to return to work after just a few days, or a week. Stillbirths, which occur later in pregnancy, often lead to a longer leave of absence. You will need time to recover physically and emotionally.

2) Contact your Human Resources Department about the resources available to you.

Your BenefitBump Care Navigator is also aware of your company’s leave policies and can help you through every step of the process.

3) Submit Short Term Disability paperwork to your provider as soon as possible.

Most short-term disability policies cover stillbirth under the definition of a disability and offer pay replacement during your recovery. To submit your paperwork, log in to your Short-Term Disability provider website and submit a claim through their secure online form.

4) Submit any certification forms or additional information that is requested.

Your provider may require additional information from your employer or health care provider. Your BenefitBump care team can help you with this, should you need further assistance.

Your BenefitBump team is here to offer emotional and logistical support as you navigate the impact that this loss has on your family. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your Care Navigator for additional resources.
